Pray

While in Cincinnati, Paul and I were moved to incorporate a prayer chapel in our home. We spent some time in the prayer chapel and walking the prayer labyrinth while we were there and we were moved by the way that they strongly affected our receptors to God. We talked over meals, took notes and finally, last night – the first night of real life in two weeks – we created a prayer chapel in our house. We had to find a place that we could easily go and be secluded and we had to make it an easy place to reach for the things that aid in worship. We moved our everyday office needs into the kitchen and we used Paul’s desk he had in college as our Chapel home base. The fabric covering the table is an upholstery fabric that my mom brought thinking that maybe I would want to use it as a table cloth. We then brought in a small lamp, our small and at this point only working CD player into the room. We have two CD’s that we have for the room by Jeff Johnson – it is very calm meditative music. We also have a few things implemented into the space –

  • Candles – we have five white (Jesus), Red (sacrifice), green (growth), Dark Brown (Sin), Blue (sanctification) – that we light in honor of these aspects of our faith and to aid us in focusing on these areas in worship. We also have plain white small candles that are to be lit as a symbol of a prayer for those that we pray for.

  • A Carafe and cup with water – this is there to represent thirst – what do we thirst for? Jesus as the living water as well as cleansing our selves before entering into prayer.

  • A plate with bread and a chalice with juice – communion

  • A wall that is being worked on by being divided into four groups by four square peg boards: 1-pictures and images of those we are praying for. 2- a place for us to pin up our woes on a wailing wall and to physically bring out our Sins and mark them on the wall. 3- A place for stirring images that invoke prayer and speak to us. And finally 4 – A place to pin notes to God – to physically offer prayers to Him.

  • We also have art supplies and paper ready for creating a visual prayer. Paul, much to my surprise, loves this form of prayer!

  • A cross – we are working on getting a larger wooden cross but right now it is a necklace hung on the wall.

  • Kneeling pillows and a chair.

Lisa,
What a beautiful idea. I love it. Having a special place to focus on communicating with God is inspiring.
I hope my picture is on your wall somewhere...
